SUMMARY:Building Your Power and Battling Imposter Syndrome
DESCRIPTION:We envision a world where diverse\, accomplished leaders collectively transform health outcomes. To realize that vision\, we seek to expand the power and influence of talented mid-career women in health and engage with senior institutional and societal leaders to catalyze systemic change for gender equality in health leadership. We work in East Africa\, India\, Nigeria\, North America\, and Southern Africa and continue to explore outreach to other regions. \nPowerUp Workshop Series \nThe Southern Africa PowerUp Workshop series is free and open to mid-career women in public health globally\, including all regions where we operate \nThe workshops are hosted virtually\, focus on developing leadership skills\, and fostering meaningful connections between Women Leaders in health within a regional context. The topics rotate with each workshop. We encourage Women Leaders in Public Health to join us\, and use these workshops as an opportunity to learn\, engage with other Women Leaders\, and build a community. \nBuilding Your Power and Battling Imposter Syndrome \n29 January 2025 – 14:00–16:30 CAT \nThe global health workforce is facing a leadership crisis; women are estimated to hold between 70 and 75% of global health positions worldwide yet\, they occupy only 25% of the senior leadership positions. \nWomenLift Health research found various structural barriers behind the gender gap in leadership including a lack of mentorship\, the demands of balancing work and family life\, and traditionally patriarchal work cultures\, which reinforce a systemic lack of self-confidence among women. \nImposter syndrome was identified in 1978 by two Psychologists\, Pauline Clance and Suzanne Innes. In a study of women academics\, they found that many women felt that they were not deserving of their accomplishments. This manifests as a lack of confidence\, and a fear of being ‘found out’. The WomenLift Health research conducted among mid-career women working in health found that women often wait for others to see their potential and tend to undersell their achievements and contributions relative to their male counterparts. \nImposter syndrome however is not an innate feeling that women are born with\, it is often the result of facing repeated exclusion and systemic barriers. While there is a \nneed to collectively hold systems accountable\, those who experience imposter syndrome also need strategies to counter it. \nPowerUp Objectives: \nIn this workshop you will: \n\n	Recognise imposter syndrome and identify ways to overcome it\n	Focus on learning from the specific experiences that are highly relevant\n	Identify experiences that will prepare you to lead more effectively within the context of your job\, role and organization\n\nRegistration Details \nPlease note that to enroll in the session\, you need to complete all sections of the registration form. \nYou are eligible for the workshop if you identify as a woman. \nThis virtual workshop is free and will be conducted in the English language. \nWomenLift Health PowerUp Workshops are interactive. By signing up\, participants agree to participate in the full session\, which includes plenary discussions and breakout group activities. \nEnrollment will be on a first-come-first-served basis\, as spots are limited. \n*Although women at all career stages are welcome to register\, we believe participants who are at the mid-career stage will benefit most\, as the content of the workshop has been designed with mid-career women health professionals in mind (10–25 years of experience working in the public health sector). If the number of registrants exceeds our capacity\, women who are within the preferred experience range will be given priority. \nRegistrants should await an email confirming their spot in the workshop. SUMMARY:Conflict Dynamics: Build Better Relationships
DESCRIPTION:We envision a world where diverse\, accomplished leaders collectively transform health outcomes. We work in East Africa\, India\, Nigeria\, North America\, and Southern Africa and continue to explore outreach to other regions. \nPowerUp Workshop Series \nThe PowerUp Workshops series are free and open to mid-career women working in public health in all the regions we work. The topics rotate with each workshop. We encourage women leaders in public health in each region to join us\, and use these workshops as an opportunity to learn\, engage with other women leaders\, and build community. \nConflict Dynamics: Build Better Relationships \n26 November @ 2pm-4pm EAT | 1pm-3pm CAT \nConflict is inevitable\, unavoidable\, complex\, and can be mentally\, emotionally\, and physically draining\, and difficult to navigate. Conflict can also negatively impact personal progress and goals\, team dynamics\, and workplace culture. Research shows that women in particular tend to avoid disagreement\, corresponding to socially constructed norms of femininity.  Conflict can also serve a purpose. It can generate new solutions\, build better relationships\, and can increase job satisfaction. It is key to innovation and can be a critical component of risk mitigation. Conflict follows a predictable pathway and will diverge to become either constructive or destructive. The question for this Power Up workshop is: How do we navigate the path of conflict so that it is constructive\, and we can walk away feeling positive\, relaxed\, and even motivated?   \nIn this session\, for beginners and seasoned practitioners alike\, we will explore the Conflict Dynamics Model by unpacking the behaviors and actions that influence interpersonal conflict. Attendees will reflect on and map out a recent work disagreement by focusing on the active\, passive\, constructive and destructive response pathways. We will understand how to identify our own “hot buttons” and contributions to either escalating or de-escalating a conflict.  \nPowerUp Objectives \nThis session will unpack the behaviours and actions that influence interpersonal conflict at the workplace. You will: \n\n	Examine how your approach to conflict affects your health\, and the health of your relationships at work and at home\n	Explore how we can shift to a more positive\, constructive response in conflict situations.\n\nWho Can Attend? \nYou are eligible for the workshop if you meet all the following criteria: \n\n	Identify as a woman;\n	Live and work in an East African or Southern Africa Country – (Angola\, Botswana\, Burundi\, Comoros\, Djibouti\, Eritrea\, Ethiopia\, Kenya\, Lesotho\, Mozambique\, Namibia\, Rwanda\, Seychelles\, Somalia\, South Africa\, South Sudan\, Sudan\, Swaziland\, Tanzania\, Uganda\, Zambia\, Zimbabwe); and\n	Are a mid-career professional working in public or global health in East Africa.\n\nAlthough women at all career stages are welcome to register\, we believe participants who are at the mid-career stage will benefit most since the content of the workshop has been designed with mid-career women health professionals in mind (10+ years of experience working in the health sector).  \nThis virtual workshop will be conducted in the English language and is free of cost. \nNote: Enrolment into the workshop will be on a first-come-first-serve basis. Spots are limited—the session can accommodate up to 150 attendees. The challenge of balancing work and personal priorities has been heightened following the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. \n“Balance” may suggest that “work” is competing with “life\,” implying that one is always working against the other\, rather than functioning in harmony\, often evoking a tightrope walk between the two. This workshop aims to reframe this notion into a more integrative and harmonious approach\, rather than striving for a neat 50/50 split. \nPowerUp Objectives: \nThis session will help you develop a more sustainable approach towards maintaining harmony between your work and personal life. You will: \n\n	Explore your preferences and how you prioritize your life;\n	Understand the strengths and challenges associated with your personal priorities and preferences; and\n	Identify and build a more harmonized approach that is tailored to your preferences.\n\nRegistration Details \nPlease note that in order to enroll in the session\, you should complete all sections of the registration form. \nYou are eligible for the workshop if you identify as a woman \nThis virtual workshop will be conducted in the English language and is free of cost. \nWomenLift Health PowerUp Workshops are interactive. Being politically savvy or skilled informs our ability to leverage our influence to advance our own goals\, as well as those of our teams and our organizations. The nature and intensity of organizational politics differs in each context. These politics are dynamic\, explicit and implicit\, and fundamental to the functioning of organizations. What are politics like in your context? \nThe negativity often associated with organizational politics creates hurdles to our ability and willingness to embrace them. The fact is that politics are natural. It would be naïve to deny that organizational politics can be potentially destructive\, yet when leveraged strategically and effectively they advance our leadership efforts. \nThis session will help you reflect on and potentially reframe your relationship with organizational politics. The objectives of this session are to unpack what organizational politics actually are\, to acknowledge that they can be burdensome\, to recognize their value\, and develop your ability to navigate them. Develop and refine politically savvy mindsets and skillsets which will enable you to navigate relationships more naturally and effectively. Join us to explore your political savviness and assess the political landscape in which you lead. \nRegistration Details \nYou are eligible for the workshop if you meet all of the following criteria: \n\n	Identify as a woman\n	Live and work in North America (Canada and U.S.)\n	Are a mid-career global health professional*\n\nThis virtual workshop will be conducted in the English language and is free of cost. \nWomenLift Health PowerUp Workshops are interactive. SUMMARY:Rethinking Imposter Syndrome
DESCRIPTION:In this two-hour workshop\, you will:   \n\n	\nRecognize imposter syndrome and look for ways to overcome it.  \n\n	\nFocus on learning from specific experiences that are highly relevant. \n\n	\nIdentify experiences that will prepare you to lead more effectively within the context of your job\, role\, and organization \n\n\nImposter syndrome was first identified in 1978 by two psychologists\, Pauline Clance and Suzanne Imes. In a study of female academics\, they found that many women felt that they weren’t deserving of their accomplishments. According to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH)\, imposter syndrome is “a psychological pattern in which people doubt their accomplishments and have a persistent\, often internalized fear of being exposed as a ‘fraud’.” As a result\, they engage in self-sabotage\, overworking and depression.  \nIn 2021\, WomenLift Health developed a discovery report that surveyed the experiences of women leaders in East Africa\, North America\, and South Asia. Our report found that 41.7% of East African women classified “lack of confidence” as a top barrier to advancing into leadership positions. According to an article in Fast Company “Imposter syndrome is a common experience among all women but has had a lasting impact amongst Black women that often hinders their ability to openly vocalize achievements and regularly share their successes”. As evidenced in our Discovery report\, women and women of color often wait for others to see their potential\, while their male counterparts apply a “go for it” attitude regardless of qualifications. While building confidence often occurs over time\, identifying ways to mitigate self-doubt remains an ongoing challenge. Further A KPMG study finds\, “75% of female executives across industries have experienced imposter syndrome in their careers\, which is a feeling of inadequacy and self-doubt that makes them continuously doubt if they are qualified enough for the job”. “For women\, biases and stereotypes in the workplace can foster and exacerbate those feelings of not belonging..” \nRecent publications also argue that imposter syndrome is not an innate feeling that women are born with but in fact\, it is the result of facing repeated exclusion and systemic bias. While we must collectively hold the system accountable\, those of us who experience imposter syndrome also need strategies to counter it. We believe in the expertise\, talent\, and capacity of women leaders and we look forward to advancing your leadership and learning from your experience!   \nRegistration Details \nThursday\, September 5\, 2024 2pm-4pm EAT/ 1pm-3pm CAT \nYou are eligible for the workshop if you meet all of the following criteria: \n\n	\nIdentify as a woman \n\n	\nLive\, work in\, and are citizens of Kenya\, Uganda\, Rwanda\, South Sudan\, Tanzania or an other Anglophone country in Africa \n\n	\nAre a health professional (public health or global health) \n\n\nThis virtual workshop will be conducted in English and is free of charge. \nEnrollment will be on a first-come-first-served basis. SUMMARY:Inclusive Leadership
DESCRIPTION:Click here to join the workshop \nIn this 2.5-hour workshop\, you will: \n\n	\nDefine Inclusive Leadership  \n\n	\nExplore your identities and how they are linked to systems of oppression   \n\n	\nExplore what it feels like to be included vs excluded in the workplace  \n\n	\nIdentify steps you can take to become a more inclusive leader \n\n\nThe second of WomenLift Health’s Four Pillars of Leadership\, Inclusive Leadership\, is at the foundation of creating a work culture where diverse people and teams are hired\, engaged\, and promoted—and want to stay. SUMMARY:Building Your Power & Rethinking Imposter Syndrome
DESCRIPTION:Facilitor: Kim Moriyama\, Center for Creative Leadership \nImpostor syndrome was first identified in 1978 by two psychologists\, Pauline Clance and Suzanne Imes. In a study of female academics\, they found that many women felt that they weren’t deserving of their accomplishments. Dr. Valerie Young\, author of The Secret Thoughts of Successful Women\, believes that women in minimize their success and because they tend to fear being “found out.” \nIn 2021\, WomenLift Health developed a discovery report that surveyed the experiences of women leaders in East Africa\, North America\, and South Asia. Our report found that 42% of North American women classified “lack of confidence” as a top barrier to advancing into leadership positions. While building confidence often occurs over time\, identifying ways to mitigate self-doubt in building confidence remains an ongoing challenge. As revealed in the report\, women and women of color often wait for others to see their potential\, while their male counterparts apply a “go for it” attitude regardless of qualifications. Women often undersell their qualifications and must be encouraged to recognize their value and contributions. Recent publications also argue that imposter syndrome is not an innate feeling that women are born with but in fact it is the result of facing repeated exclusion and systemic bias. While we must collectively hold the system accountable\, those of us who experience imposter syndrome also need strategies to counter it. We believe in the expertise\, talent\, and capacity of women leaders and we look forward to advancing your leadership and learning from your experience! \nThis Workshop \nThis interactive session will help you define and address imposter syndrome and work with others to identify potential gaps to improve your confidence. \nYou are eligible for the workshop if you meet all of the following criteria: \n\n	Identify as a woman\n	Live and work in North America (U.S. and Canada)\n	Are a mid-career global health professional*\n\nIn this two-hour workshop\, you will: \n\n	Recognize imposter syndrome and look for ways to overcome it\n	Focus on learning from the specific experiences that are highly relevant\n	Identify experiences that will prepare you to lead more effectively within the context of your job\, role\, and organization

SUMMARY:Effectively Navigating Organisational Politics | PowerUp Workshop South Asia
DESCRIPTION:Effectively Navigating Organisational Politics\n\nOrganisational politics—influence tactics at the workplace to improve personal or organizational interests— can often be polarising\, particularly for women leaders. Moreover\, due to systemic gender biases\, women are often denied the space\, coaching\, and ownership to explore the challenges they face at the workplace\, often leaving them with limited choices when it comes to organisational politics: embracing it as a necessary evil\, engaging half-heartedly\, or refusing to engage altogether\, despite the potential negative impact on their careers.\n\nThis workshop aims to deconstruct and demystify terms that typically elicit negative perceptions such as workplace politics\, political skills\, and political savvy. Through this interactive session\, we demonstrate that politics are a neutral and natural part of everyday life in organisations that offer crucial opportunities\, connections\, and resources for women leaders to bolster their careers.\n\nResearch has found that politically savvy leaders have better career prospects\, are seen as more promotable\, and are less likely to have derailed careers. This workshop is designed to equip mid-career women leaders working in public or global health in South Asia with the understanding and skills to navigate organisational politics as a strategic and necessary choice for their growth.\n\n\nClick here to register & learn more >>>
